What is AI voiceover and where is it used?
Updated: · 5 min read · Xaly Editorial Team
AI voiceover turns a written script into an audio file read by a natural-sounding narrator voice generated with AI. Its main uses are promo and social-media videos, phone-system greetings and hold messages, e-learning, presentations and language versions of the same content. Good results depend on writing the script to be heard, agreeing how brand names are pronounced and, if a real person’s voice is used, getting that person’s written permission.
How does AI voiceover work?
AI voiceover systems use models that have learned the stress, pace and intonation of human speech from a large amount of recorded speech. Given a script, the system reads it in the chosen narrator’s voice. The difference from older, flat text-to-speech tools is most noticeable in emphasis and in the pauses between sentences.
That said, AI voiceover is not flawless on its own. Abbreviations, foreign words, numbers and names can be misread, and the same sentence can come out with different emphasis in two generations. In professional voiceover work the audio is therefore listened to, checked and regenerated where needed.
Where is AI voiceover used?
AI voiceover is especially handy where the same voice must be used consistently and content is updated often. When the script changes, a new version can be produced without booking a studio, and the same narrator is kept across everything.
When planning, think about where the audio will be heard. A message played down a phone line and a training video watched on headphones need different pacing and loudness. Sharing this before recording starts saves corrections later.
- Promo, advertising and social-media videos
- Phone-system greetings, hold and after-hours messages
- Corporate training and e-learning modules
- Product how-to videos and presentations
- Language versions of the same content
- In-store and event announcements
Human voice actor or AI voiceover?
Three questions decide it: how often will the content change, how many languages will it need, and how much acting does it call for? Frequently updated training content, phone messages and multilingual videos suit AI voiceover. Character work, subtle emotional shifts and a signature advert the brand will use for years usually call for a voice actor.
The two can also work together. A voice actor can record the main advert while short social clips, training videos and phone messages for the same campaign are produced with AI. What matters is that tone and delivery stay consistent across all of it. Budget and timing also play a part: when you need a lot of content quickly or frequent updates, AI voiceover is practical, while a one-off, carefully crafted production may justify working with an artist.
Do you need permission to use a real person’s voice?
Yes. A voice identifies a person, and imitating it without permission can cause serious problems under personality rights and data protection law. If you want to reproduce the voice of an employee, a founder or a well-known person with AI, get that person’s explicit written consent for that use.
The consent should state clearly what the voice will be used for, in which content and for how long, and what happens if consent is withdrawn. Advertising with a voice made to sound like a well-known person should not be considered without permission. Take legal advice for your own situation.
Transparency matters too. With voice assistants that talk to customers on the phone in particular, letting people know they are speaking to AI is the right approach for both trust and compliance.
How should you write a voiceover script?
Writing for the ear is different from writing for the eye. Long, nested sentences get lost when heard; brackets, slashes and abbreviations sound odd read aloud. Reading the script aloud once before sending it reveals most problems.
For phone messages, think about the listener’s situation: they are waiting and want to know what to do as quickly as possible. Keep greetings and after-hours messages short, clear and current, and remember to update them when opening hours change.
- Keep sentences short, one idea per sentence
- Write numbers and dates the way they should be read
- Spell out abbreviations or show how to say them
- Note how brand and product names are pronounced
- Mark the words to stress
- For video, note which scene each line goes with
How do you check the quality of AI voiceover?
Rather than approving the audio after one listen on headphones, listen where it will be used: over a phone line, on a phone speaker or with the video’s music. A voice that sounds fine on studio headphones can come across differently on a phone line.
- Are names and numbers read correctly?
- Does the voice fall naturally at the end of sentences?
- Are volume and tone consistent between lines?
- Does the pace fit the video or message length?
- Is it clear over background music?
How does the Xaly voiceover service work?
Xaly voiceover is offered as a service: you send your script and where it will be used, choose from female and male narrator samples, and receive studio-quality audio files. Each sentence is generated several times and the most accurate, calmest reading is chosen; pronunciation of brand names and other names is agreed with you. Files arrive loudness-matched, cleanly trimmed and named line by line.
The same content can be voiced in Turkish and other languages, and the language choice is confirmed with a sample. Lines you are not happy with are regenerated. A real person’s voice is used as a brand voice only with that person’s written permission, and no voice is imitated without consent.
Frequently asked questions
Can AI voiceover be used in advertising?
Yes. But if the voice is made to resemble a real person, that person’s permission is needed and the advert must not mislead. A well-known person’s voice should never be imitated without consent.
Can we use our own voice as a brand voice?
With Xaly, yes, if the voice owner gives written permission. The consent should state the purpose and duration of use clearly.
What file format do phone systems need?
Phone systems accept different formats, so check with your provider. Xaly delivers 48 kHz WAV by default, and other formats for phone systems or video are available on request.
Are pronunciation problems common in Turkish scripts?
The main things to watch are brand names of foreign origin, abbreviations and numbers. Marking pronunciation in the script and listening carefully to those lines before delivery prevents most issues.
Can we ask for corrections?
With Xaly, lines you are not happy with are regenerated, and brand and name pronunciations are agreed with you.
